Texas Tech Health El Paso Wins $5 Million in Grants to Boost Cancer Prevention
Texas Tech Health El Paso is making a powerful stride in the fight against cancer, earning nearly $5 million in grant funding from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). This major investment will directly support two of the university’s most impactful initiatives:
- SuCCCeS – Focused on colorectal cancer screening and early detection.
- BEST – Dedicated to breast cancer education, screening, and patient support.
Both programs have been a lifeline for underserved communities across West and South Texas, where access to affordable healthcare can be a challenge. Early detection is key—five-year survival rates for many cancers increase dramatically when found in the earliest stages.
Since launching in 2011, these outreach efforts have reached more than 55,500 uninsured or underinsured residents. The results speak volumes: 77 breast cancers and 39 colorectal cancers have been detected early, giving patients a far greater chance at recovery and long-term survival.
This latest round of funding ensures that Texas Tech Health El Paso can expand its reach, improve access to screenings, and continue educating communities about prevention and early detection. It’s another example of Red Raiders making a real difference—proving that Texas Tech’s impact goes far beyond the classroom and the playing field.
